Ground breaking ceremony – Vietnamese Museum Australia – 119 Durham St Sunshine

“Life was not meant to be easy – indeed like the flight of the Vietnamese refugees, the aspirations of a museum started with an architectural impression from the Maribyrnong’s defence land in the early 2005, to the architectural design at 220 Barkley St Footscray in 2019 to finally an actual site ready for construction here at 119 Durham St Sunshine - our journey has been challenging but a home is finally found. This is thanks to the clear vision of this project, and our deepest, deepest gratitude to the bipartisan support of our State and Federal governments, and the support from the three levels of government. No other Vietnamese museum has achieved this level of official support and recognition in the world. The Vietnamese refugee story is securely placed in the history of this nation.

Like the classic Australian movie The Castle, this isn’t just a museum – It is a home where we can permanently pray for the souls wondering in jungles and deep in the oceans and their broken dream in finding freedom; to express our gratitude to the 523 Australian soldiers who died protecting us; and to join in with other Aussies of migrant and refugee backgrounds to proudly share our story and our contribution as part of Australia’s modern history.

There is a famous Vietnamese saying of Uong Nuoc Nho Nguon, remember the source when you drink the water. As one of the people who took part in the official establishment of this museum who has the honour of standing before you, it is my duty to pay tribute to those people, for without them, their leadership and commitment in the early days, this museum might still be an aspiration today.

Kính thưa quý vị - hành trình hình thành viện bảo tàng thật gian nan khó khăn, khởi đầu là giấc mơ có một nơi khang trang để tri ân những vị lính quân đội Hoàng Gia Úc, một nơi vĩnh viễn cầu nguyện cho vong linh những đồng bào đã hy sinh trên biển cả hay rừng sâu tìm tự do, nơi ghi lại những câu chuyện tỵ nạn tại sao người Việt phải bỏ nước ra đi sau ngày gọi là thống nhất đất nước, và là nơi mọi người Úc gốc Việt và thế hệ mai sau có thể hãnh diện với nguồn gốc, với căn cước tỵ nạn và những đóng góp của họ vào trang sử cận đại nước Úc này.

Giấc mơ có một ngôi nhà vĩnh viễn để thực hiện những ước nguyện trên bắt đầu bằng một bản vẽ kiến trúc trên đất của Bộ Quốc Phòng năm 2005, sau đó là một kiến trúc trên địa điểm 220 Barkley St Footscray năm 2019 và bây giờ viện bảo tàng sắp được khởi công xây dựng tại 119 Duhnam St Sunshine năm 2025 nhân dịp cộng đồng người Việt hải ngoại đánh dấu 50 mất nước, 50 năm định cư, 50 thành đạt trên các đệ tam quốc gia. Nhân dịp lễ Động Thổ, PV xin tri ân những vị sau đây đã cùng đồng hành cùng với hàng ngàn chữ ký, để viện bảo tàng được trở thành hiện thực:

I pay tribute to: 103 years young Bác Điền Phong and 93 years young dì Sinh – you gave us the inspiration to take those first steps.

To our federal and state elected officials: Hon. Bill Shorten, Hon. Tim Watts, Hon. Luke Donnellan, Hon. Marsha Thomson, Senator Jane Hume, Senator James Patterson, Hon. David Coleman, former Senator Scott Ryan, former Mayor Nam Quach, Cr Cuc Lam.

To the Vietnamese community leadership: Former VCA President Bon Nguyen, inaugural VMA Director Toan Quoc Nguyen, VCA Wollongong President Teresa Thuy Huong Tran OAM, VCA Qld President Dr Cuong Bui AM, former VCA NSW President Paul Nguyen, former VCA NSW VP Kate Hoang, inaugural VMA Directors Phong Nguyen OAM, Kingsley Mundy, Kevin Tran, Bruce Mildenhall, Kim Bui. And Quang Luu AO who assisted in the content of VMA Constitution.

I acknowledge the spiritual support from the Buddhist faith represented by Dr Pham Phuc Nhan, the Catholic church represented by Mr Nguyen Ngoc Truc, and Hoa Hao represented by Mr Do Tien Nha. I pay tribute to the 12,000+ signatures in support of the museum in 2019, VCA Vic 2016-2019 term’s Prudential and Advisory Council Mr Nguyen Khuong Ninh and Mr Hoang Phuong, FABA’s Loc Lam, Binh Le, Hong Ky Nguyen, RABA’s Anh Thành, a Nhân, chú Tòan, a Thái Hải, and long time supporters Mr Dung Le, anh Trung Nguyen and chi Thuy Phan, and SICMAA’s Be Ha.

I pay tribute to the people who were the first Leads getting the work done on the ground, the inaugural Program Management Office Leads Hanh Do, Diep Nguyen, Nhu Hoang Nguyen, Albert Le, Andrew Do.

With the deepest gratitude I pay tribute to the Vietnam veterans Brendan Kincaid, Steve Lowe, Grant Coultman Smith who have been travelling with this project since day dot.

Of all the people I’ve acknowledged, four are no longer with us, Mr Nguyễn Khương Ninh, Mr Hòang Phương, Mr Bình Lê and tragically last week Dr Cường Bùi AM. May your spirits continue to support this project so that your aspirations live on.

I am sure the VMA team will document more fulsomely this journey - from dreams to reality - but today it is my duty to publicly express our collective appreciation. Thank you to all of you and I am comforted by the fact that many are still continuing your involvement.

The VMA is in good hand and I wish the leadership all the best as you steer this boat forward during construction and beyond.
